Tusa Freedom HD Mask

Get a great deal on the TUSA Freedom HD  at these recommend retailers:

The TUSA Freedom HD is designed with both comfort and performance in mind, making it one of the most versatile masks in TUSA’s lineup. The large single lens gives divers a wide, unobstructed view, which is especially useful when monitoring gauges, keeping track of a buddy, or enjoying the scenery without having to constantly turn your head.

The Freedom skirt technology is one of the standout elements. By using varying silicone thicknesses, textured surfaces, and support ridges, the mask adapts better to the contours of the face. This results in a secure seal for medium to wide faces, minimizing leaks and reducing the need for over-tightening the strap. For divers who have struggled to find a mask that seals properly, this feature makes a noticeable difference.

Another practical benefit is the rotating buckle and 3D strap system. The buckle pivots to follow the natural strap angle, helping distribute pressure evenly and making the mask more comfortable for longer dives. The folding design also makes it easy to pack for trips. Combined with the thick silicone and solid frame, the mask feels built to last, even with frequent use in saltwater environments.

The downsides are worth noting. The wide fit does not suit smaller or narrow faces, and some divers may find the skirt extends too far near the hairline. The price is also on the higher side compared to basic recreational masks. However, these trade-offs are outweighed by the clarity, comfort, and durability the mask offers to the divers it fits best.

Overall, the TUSA Freedom HD is a dependable option for recreational divers, underwater photographers, and anyone who values a panoramic view and reliable seal. It has clear strengths in visibility and comfort, positioning it as a premium mask that justifies its reputation in the market.

How To Choose A Dive Mask? Buying Guide

You decided to buy your first dive mask and quickly realize that it can be a little intimidating because you don’t know what to look for.  So,  we have created a quick buying guide to help you make your choice easy.

Lens

The lens is one of the biggest decisions you will have to make when choosing a mask. These may come with corrective lenses, or a special coating to enhance visibility, but must be made from tempered glass. You can choose from 3 different lens configurations, single, double, or multi-lens.  The configuration you choose is generally based on your personal preference.

Atomic Venom Frameless Black

Single Lens

Single Lens

A single-lens mask has no frame in the middle where the nose bridge is located. This gives the mask a less obstructive view and a more open feeling. However, it’s not possible to fit a prescription lens to these masks.

Best Scuba Dive Masks For 2025 2

Double Lens

Double Lens

These are the more common design use for diving mask and are more sturdy and durable. They are often compatible with prescription replacement lenses and can be fitted quite easily.

Cressi Panomatic Wide View

Double Lens

Multi-Lens

Mask designed with multiple lenses generally features a windowpane on either side of the mask.  This helps to let more light in and give a brighter and more open feeling. Some divers feel like it also gives them a better peripheral vision.

Internal Volume

The internal volume or “Profile” of the mask is the space between the lens and your face and something you must consider when choosing a mask for diving. This is less important when choosing a mask for snorkeling. But for scuba diving, having less volume in the mask makes it easier to equalize the mask as it compresses at depth. A low profile mask is also easier to clear water and provides a greater field of vision.

A low profile mask provides a wider field-of-vision and are easier to clear.

Skirt

Your diving mask skirt should always be made from high-quality silicone for a superior seal and a comfortable fit. The one feature you will find on a good quality dive mask is a feathered edge or double skirt. This is found just inside the main seal and creates a greater contact area with your face further reducing the possibility of a leak.

Frame

When it comes to the frame of the mask there is two preference, either Frame or Frameless

Akona Breeze Mask

Framed

Framed Masks

These are made with a rigid frame that the lens, skirt, buckles, and straps are all fitted to. You will find that they are slightly bigger and heavier than a frameless mask, but can be dismantled for repairs or fitting prescription lenses.

Cressi F1 Frameless Mask

Frameless

Frameless Masks

With these masks, the silicone skirt is molded directly to the lens and the buckles and straps are attached directly to the skirt. This provides a lower profile and allows the mask to be filed flat making them ideal as a backup mask that can be stored in your BCD pocket.  The drawback to this design is that it not possible to replace the lens if it breaks and you cannot fit them with prescription lenses.

Straps and Buckels

You also want to consider the types of buckles and straps when choosing the best dive mask. Silicone Straps provide a degree of stretch and flexibility that does not hinder movement and secures the mask to your face without breaking the seal.

Since everyone is different you also want to make sure the mask has an easy to adjust buckle system. More advanced buckle system features push or squeezes buttons to release the mask strap and swivel that provide vertical and lateral movements for exact fit and comfort.

How To Properly Fit A Dive Mask?

Best Dive Mask - How to Fit a MaskOnce you have decided on the type of mask that works best for you. Getting a proper fit is Key.

When fitting your mask for a proper fit, it’s best to not have the mask strap in place. Reverse the strap that it passes in front of the Lens.

Look straight up and brush any hair away from your face.

Continue looking up and lightly place the mask on your face. The mask skirt should be in contact with your face completely around the edge.

Lightly inhale through your nose. The mask should create a vacuum on your face with no signs of leakage or air passageways.

Exhale into the mask to loosen.

What to look for In a Proper Fit?

There are a few things you must consider in a properly fitting mask:

Comfort – There’s no surprise here. An uncomfortable mask can quickly take all the fun out of diving. You want to be sure that the silicone skirt is soft and supple, and doesn’t irritate or pinch your face in any way.

Soft nose pocket– Sometimes overlooked by many divers. You, also want to ensure that your mask has a soft and comfortable nose pocket. One that allows you to pinches your nose for easy equalizing.

Unwanted contact with the Face – Also, when looking for a proper fit, you don’t what any hard part of the mask contacting your face. As you descend on your dive, the airspace within your mask compresses reducing the space between your face and the mask. Applying more pressure to the parts of the mask already tucking your face.

How To Prepare Your Mask Before Diving?

It is good practice to inspect your mask before each dive. Make sure it is adjusted properly and free from damage.

This is also a great time to add anti-fog to your mask lens to help prevent your mask from fogging. Some divers still use old fashion spit, but an anti-fog solution or gel delivers the best result.

Spread the liquid in your mask then thoroughly rinse your mask with fresh water to prevent any eye irritation.

Make sure there is no sunscreen on your face in areas that come in contact with the mask skirt. This can cause an improper seal, deterioration of the silicone, and may irritate your eyes.

Caring For Your Scuba Mask After Diving

Caring for your mask is pretty straightforward. Simply rinse it in fresh water after every dive. Rinsing alone should remove any salt or residue. However, a quick wipe of the lens and skirt will ensure it’s thoroughly clean.

Let the mask dry completely. Then, place it in a protective mask case or box to prevent it from getting crushed or damaged.

Also, remember to store it in a dry cool place out of direct sunlight.

So there you have it, our selection of the best dive mask. If you recently bought a dive mask or have a favorite you’ve been using for years,  kindly share your experience in the comments below.
