Everything You Need To Know about the Shearwater Perdix 2 Dive Computer

The Perdix 2 is the upgraded version of the popular Perdix AI dive computer. It has been redesigned to be more robust with a tougher case, Titanium Bezel, and Titanium Piezo touch buttons.  New aluminosilicate glass screen also increased clarity, and improved damage and scratch resistance.

It has also been updated with new features including strong vibration customizable alerts, and the ability to now pair with 4 Shearwater Transmitters. Apart from this, nothing much has changed with the computer. It is still easy to use whether you are a beginner or a technical diver, and still has a large, clear, customizable screen and simple user interface divers have come to love.  The Perdix 2 is also available in two versions, the TI and TI Black version.

Now, let’s look at some of the features that make this computer stand out from others on the market.

Below are some of the feature we think makes this dive computer stand out:

Shearwater Perdix AI Dive Modes

Image from Shearwater.com

4 Dive Modes

The Shearwater Predix 2 features four different dive modes, allowing the dive computer to be used in almost any dive scenario you can imagine.

  • In Recreational Mode, it can be used for diving with standard Air or Enriched Nitrox with up to 3 gas mixes for serious recreational divers.
  • It also has an Open Circuit Technical Mode that will make full decompression calculations for trimix diving.
  • And, a Closed Circuit Mode with a constant po2 for diving with rebreathers.
  • It also has a Gauge Mode that will take time and depth, act as a resettable stopwatch, and allow you to see tank pressure information, but it will not make any decompression calculations.

Vibrant Color Display

The Shearwater Perdix 2 features a 2.2-inch full-color LCD that is bright, crisp, and easy to read in any position.  The brightness of the screen can also be set to automatically adjust to variable light conditions.  It also features large easy-to-read digits and color-coded alarms on the display allowing you to monitor safety information quickly.

Sherwater Perdix AI Dive Computer

User Customizable Display

Another excellent feature of the Perdix 2 is that it only shows the essential diving information relevant to the dive mode you’re in. This ensures no redundant information is displayed, keeping the display neat.  You also have the option to adjust certain rows of information to further customize it to your liking.

Shearwater Teric Transmitter

Optional Wireless Air Integration

The optional wireless air integration allows you to monitor your current tank pressure as well as your gas time remaining. It is also now able to connect to 4 Shearwater Wireless Transmitters, which is great for advanced recreational diving or technical diving.

Shearwater Perdix AI Slim

Slim, Low-Profile Design

One of the main feedback from customers about the Petrel is its size, and Shearwater Research listened. They designed the Perdix to be 30% smaller in volume than the Petrel. This makes the computer more streamlined and lighter on your wrist.

Shearwater Perdix AI Compass

Digital Compass

Another feature that makes the Perdix stand out from others on the market, is its highly responsive digital compass that’s simple to read, use, and very accurate. It’s also 3 axes tilt-compensated, meaning you don’t need to have to the compass level to get an accurate reading. It can easily be accessed in all dive modes by pressing the right button once.

Perdix 2 Vibration Alert Warning settings

Vibration Alert Warning

One of the new features of the Perdix 2 compared to the previous version is that it now features a strong vibration alert warning. This allows the dive computer to get your attention without alerting the entire dive site with annoying beeps.

Perdix AI Dive Computer Battery

User-Replaceable Battery

The Perdix AI is also equipped with a user-replaceable battery. It is very simple to change and uses a standard AA battery that can be found worldwide. The battery plug can be unscrewed using a coin and has 2 o-ring for double security against flooding the battery compartment. You can expect to get about 40 hours of battery life with air integration enabled.  The transmitter also uses a not-so-common 3V Cr2 Lithium battery, so you might want to pack a few extras when on a dive holiday.

Perdix AI Cloud

Bluetooth Smart Technology

You can easily upload your dive log to your PC, Mac, Phone, or smart device using Bluetooth Smart Technology via the Shearwater Cloud app. The App is fully customizable, easy to use, and full of useful information. It also provides a great way to download firmware updates for Shearwater. This ensures your dive computer keeps advancing as updates become available.

What We Like

The Shearwater Perdix 2 is a very compelling dive computer and there are many things that we liked. However, these are the features that stand out the most to us.

Easy-to-Read Display  -The screen is easy to read and understand, even when packed full of dive information. The digits are large and can easily be read at a glance.

Intuitive User Interface – Although it’s a powerful dive computer with more advanced features like trimix and closed circuit.  It is much easier to navigate, set up, and understand than many dive computers with more basic functions. This is because of a simple dynamic two-button user interface with hints displayed on the screen that will show what each button does.  On each menu screen, it will tell you what will happen if you push the right button and what will happen when push the left button. If you take your time and follow the on-screen instructions, you should get the hang of the computer very quickly.

Digital Compass – We also liked the very responsive digital compass, it simply works. We like that there are not a lot of complicated features.

What We Don’t Like

We think the Shearwater Perdix AI is as solid as it gets. However, there are a few things we think need improvement.

No Rechargeable Battery – There is no rechargeable battery. For the price, we were expecting this feature, like on the Suunto Eon Steel ,  Scubapro G2, or Shearwater Peregrine.  However, we cannot hold much grievance since it uses an AA battery that can easily be found worldwide and easy to change.

No go-back button – There is no dedicated go-back button. One button is used to move to the next option and the other button is used to select.

Price – It’s not cheap. If you’re you’re going to be doing only basic recreational diving, then you are going to pay for features you don’t need and will never use.  If you’d like a trim-down version of this computer for recreational diving we would recommend the Shearwater Peregrine.

Who Should Buy the Perdix 2 Dive Computer?

The Shearwater Perdix is designed for the more serious recreational or technical divers. A wide range of dive modes and capabilities makes it a great choice if you are a diver who is looking for a dive computer to accompany you through your diving career.

However, this might be too much dive computer if you’re looking to do more simple recreational diving. If you are looking for a dive computer with the same intuitive layout as that of the Perdix but with more simplified recreational dive modes, you should check out the new Shearwater Peregrine.
