Scubapro Seawing Nova Review Video

Below is a quick YouTube video review of the Seawing Nova produced by the guys over at Simplyscuba.com. In the video, you can get a closer look at the fins and some of its main features.

Scubapro Seawing Nova Key Features:

Hinged Blade Design

The blade of the Fins is actually connected by two flexible arms (hinges), which allows the blade to flex more than traditional paddle fins (Your ankle is only able to bend to a certain point). Because of the increased angle of attack, the power from kicking is more focused on pushing water backward instead of pulling a flat plate through the water. This feature will greatly increase your efficiency and greatly reduce strain on your ankles.

Self-adjusting Bungee Straps

Heavy duty marine grade bungee straps system are designed for quick to put on comfort. Getting this fin off and on is a piece of cake, equally on the deck or in the water. They are also designed to self-adjust with increasing pressure and depth. So as your dive boots compress with depth, the elastic strap keeps your foot snug in the foot pocket.

Wing Shape Blade

The blade of the Seawing Nova also has up-curved edges that help with the fin’s steady feel while kicking underwater. This also helps reduces drag on both the upstroke and downstroke.

Upgraded Foot Pocket

The foot pocket has been redesigned for added comfort and grip pad to reduce slipping on wet surfaces.  It also comes with an extended heel plate that Scubapro claims enhances power transmission from your legs to the fins, as well as reduces lower leg strain and fatigue.

Lightweight

Positively buoyant, they’re lightweight and are perfect for when traveling.

Functionality: 10

Durability: 9

They are well constructed and durable However, Hinge might be a failure point.

They are a very expensive pair of fins, but you get what you pay for.

What We Like

The first thing we like about the Scubapro Seawing Nova is how much power it delivers with so little effort. They might take a little bit to get used to at first, but once you do they are great.

The bungee strap makes putting on the fins very easy and keeps your feet snuggly in place throughout the dive.  The foot pocket is very comfortable and delivers power to the fins with little strain on your ankles and leg. This helps to increase trust while minimizing fatigue.

They are very well constructed and lightweight, making them easy to carry around and travel with.

What We Don’t Like

They generally retail for around $200 making them pricey compared to others on the market today. The Seawing Novas are light and buoyant underwater, many divers find them to be very buoyant on the dive and have to make an adjustment to their diving styles a bit.

They have also been reports of the hinges breaking under heavy load. However,  Scubapro clams to have fixed this problem with the upgraded version of these fins.

Who Should Buy the Scubapro Swing Nova Fins?

These fins would work great for recreational or technical diving. If you are a diver that prefers a more efficient pair of fins that’s easy on your leg and ankles, then you should definalty consider these fins. However, if you prefer a stiffer pair of fins that deliver more power and less flex like the Jet Fins, this might not be the fins for you.

They are a bit pricey and might not be ideal fins for someone who only drives occasionally. If you’re a seasoned diver, then these would definalty be worth the investment.
