Mares Rover 2s Review: Video
Below is a quick video review for the Mares R2s first stage done by the guys over at DeepBlueDiving.com. In the short video below you can get a closer look at the key feature of the first stage. The second video looks at the Rover Second stage and some of its key features as well.
Mares Rover 2S: Key Features and Benefits
Compact and Lightweight 1st Stage
The Mares Rover 2S 1st stage is fairly lightweight compact. This also makes it great for traveling as well as local use. It features simple and reliable unbalanced piston design with 1 high-pressure port and 4 low-pressure port on a durable chrome-plated brass body.
Patented DFC System
This regulator also features Mares DFC System which minimizes the drop in intermediate pressure on inhalation, which in-turn increases the regulator performance on deeper dives or high demanding situations (like swimming up current). This is why Mares say their second stages does not require manual adjustment. (You can also watch the Mares DFC system Video to learn how this works and also see it in action).
Reliable Downstream Valve
The second stage uses a standard downstream valve with no user adjustment. Mares claims that because the first stage delivers a constant flow of air to the second stage in almost all diving conditions, there is no need for the diver to make any adjustments to breathing efforts, and many divers that had first-hand experience with this regulator claims this to be true.
Smooth Breathing Second Stage
Mares also claims the second stage breathes naturally, and easily, and will reduce the formation of ice in cold water diving due to its’ Vortex Assisted Design (VAD) system. This system bypass air coming from the low-pressure house directly to the mouthpiece, offering superior performance and initially very natural breathing, even for an unbalanced second stage. What We Like
It’s easy to see what would make this regulator a favorite for new divers. Its simple design makes operating the regulator pretty straight forward. There are no user-adjustable settings to distract you from your dive. Simply pop the regulator in your mouth and breath.
The mid-size second stage lightweight and also fits comfortably in your hands. It over-sized purge button also make it easy to purge even while wearing thick gloves. The Oversized purge button covers the entire front of the second stage, making it easy to find. The mesh grid also does great work at handing unwanted free-flows.
Although it’s set at an affordable price point, the regulator does not feel cheap by any means. It’s well constructed from high-quality materials and should last a lifetime once maintained properly.
What We Don’t Like
There is not much we didn’t like about this great breathing regulator.
However, one of the only issue we had with this regulator is the fact that it lacks diver adjustability. Although this might be great for a new diver, more experienced divers will see the unavailability to fine-tune your breathing as a weakness.
Who Should Purchase Mares Rover 2S Regulator?
The Mares Rover 2s makes a great first regulator for divers just starting out. Its operation is pretty straight forward and has no diver adjustable settings to complicate new divers. Its simple operation, reliability, and easiness to maintain also make it a great choice as a rental regulator for dive centers.
Seasoned divers looking for a great regulator for their resonant system (pony bottle) would also appreciate its reliability and inexpensive cost.
